2 Samuel 9:3 “And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.”

The son of Johnathan was not lame from birth but he became lame when his father’s fell in 2 Samuel 4:4 [“And Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.”]

2 Samuel 9: 5-8
Verse 5:  “Then King David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lode bar. (“Not having”, a place without pasture or a barren city) or better still no word.”

Verse 6: “Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant!”

Verse 7: “And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.”

I declare that God will remember you so that you can eat bread continually

2 Samuel 21:16 “And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David.”

Exposition: The battle between David and Goliath was not over until David and his men dealt with four different men born to the Giant in Gath. Gath was the birth place of Goliath.

Note: Those who fought your fathers have sons who will also want to fight you hence you must not be ignorant of their devices. Their swords are heavier than what their fathers used against your father, and the battle gets intense as the years go by. The good news is that we are fighting from a place of victory.

The enemies of your fathers come in two forms: the external and internal. External is Goliath and his sons. Now let’s talk about the internal enemies.

1 Kings 2: 5-6 “Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.”

Exposition: One of the three sons of Zeruiah, David’s sister, and “captain of the host” during the whole of David’s reign. The other two were Abishai and Asahel.

I beg to differ with David on what he wanted Solomon to do to Joab. I agree with him applying wisdom. Joab killed Amasa because Amasa killed his brother Asahel.

But David was not happy because Joab spoke angry with him after the death of his son.

  • I will leave it the bible commentators to do the analysis.

2 Samuel 19:6-7 “In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.”

Verse 7: “Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.”

  1. God let a book of remembrance be open for my sake and bring me out of Lo-debar.
  2. Give me wisdom and power to handle any sworn enemy of my life and that of my children’s children.
